I wanted it to be a long time before I had to write a piece on legislation and its impact on me, my friends, my family, and some of the people that I look after and educate here in Ely.

On the 16th of April the Supreme Court in the UK decided that the legal definition of a woman, within the wording of the Equalities Act, is based on biological sex (BBC headline 15 April 2025).

There have been many arguments for and in favour of this ruling, made both within the mainstream and queer communities. However the reality is that this will make those who are transgender feel less safe, regardless of their protected status under section 7 of the Act, and that this ruling undermines their very identity and tells them they are less.

In this environment, it feels important to make my position clear.

Transwomen are women

Transmen are men

Non-binary people are valid.

Gender identity isn’t binary

Biological sex isn’t binary

A birthing person is entitled to dignity and respect no matter what gender they identify as.

My classes will always be a safe space for people of all ethnicities, identities and sexualities. I will not tolerate transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, racism or any other form of prejudice. If this position costs me business, I accept that consequence.

Peace and Love
